Introduction to the HJ Monaro (1974):

Building on the success of the HQ, the HJ Monaro GTS, introduced in October 1974, emerged as a true standout amidst a growing influx of European models. Designed to meet the demands of discerning buyers, this model received a bold facelift and introduced a host of refinements.

The HJ Monaro GTS set itself apart with its beefier styling, featuring extra-strength bumpers, a striking blacked-out grille, wrap-around rear lights, aggressive side vents, and distinctive decals. The addition of factory front and rear spoilers enhanced its presence, especially the deep rear spoiler that accentuated its sleek, sloping boot line.

Inside, the HJ Monaro GTS offered superior comfort with full foam high-backed seats available in a variety of trims and colors. The comprehensive sports instrument panel, unique to this model, featured clear, recessed gauges with international symbols and multiple ventilation outlets, reflecting the car’s attention to detail.

Holden upgraded the local 308 engine to maintain its performance edge, compensating for the de-tuned Chevrolet 350 due to U.S. anti-pollution regulations. This enhancement and the car's other advancements solidified the HJ Monaro GTS as a favourite in the Monaro lineage and an enduring icon in Australian automotive history.
